Icarus Phoenix Announces New Album: “I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said”

Icarus Phoenix has unveiled their fourth studio album, “I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said”, released on August 15th, 2024. Following their success with the critically acclaimed “Son” EP and their DIY tour to Japan and the USA earlier this year, the album has been met with enthusiastic praise from fans and critics alike.

Recorded at June Audio in Provo, Utah, in November 2022, the album was produced by Jed Jones, known for his work with Post Malone and The Killers. The band enlisted the help of longtime friends, including Jake Bellows of Neva Dinova for additional guitar, and Justin Pacheco (bass) and Andrew Young (drums) to assist in tracking an impressive 40 songs in just three days. The album also features contributions from Chaz Prymek of Lake Mary and Rocky Cordray of Teleprom, adding unique noise and ambience to the mix.

The album’s creation was a deeply personal journey for Drew Danburry, who wrote the material during a tumultuous period following his divorce from his wife of 13 years. The separation and the challenges of co-parenting, particularly the struggle to maintain a relationship with his 8-year-old son amidst a housing crisis, are central themes in the album.

“The most difficult thing about a separation is how the foundation with which you’ve built your reality becomes water.”

Danburry reflects, “When confronted with major life changes we find out who we are at our core. Writing these songs helped me wrap my head around the reality of not just a difficult breakup but navigating a co-parenting process with a person actively trying to push me out of my son’s life.

The album is a powerful exploration of dealing with profound sadness and rebuilding one's identity. Danburry adds, “To hold firm boundaries but not react in anger is a delicate test of balance and these aren’t lessons that can be taught outside of experience. My hope is that someone else can relate to and/or understand their own struggles better in experiencing these songs.

With the album’s release, Icarus Phoenix is gearing up for an East Coast tour in September, ready to bring their new music to a wider audience. The album’s raw honesty and emotional depth are set to resonate with listeners, offering a soundtrack for those navigating their own difficult times.

Danburry concludes, “The most difficult thing about a separation is how the foundation with which you’ve built your reality becomes water. Rebuilding that foundation of who you are is difficult, especially when the foundation you’ve relied on in the past is now not only questionable but aggressively warping your reality. We’ve all dealt with sadness. With difficulties in life. That’s what this album is about. Confront the sadness. Learn from it. Become light.
