Produced and recorded by Jonah Brockman in Tecumseh, MI, Beef is a masterclass in retro Folk-Rock. The soundscapes created by Brockman’s production are spacious and atmospheric, perfectly complementing Mackinder’s storytelling. The album has a distinct vibe of a weathered traveler, someone who has seen life’s ups and downs, and while a bit jaded and worn, still holds onto a sliver of hope. The melodies throughout the album are concise and simplistic, allowing the stories within each song to take center stage.
The album is not just a solo effort; Mackinder is joined by an impressive lineup of musicians who bring a rich, Americana-infused sound to the acoustic-driven tracks. His brother and former bandmate, Jeremy Mackinder (known for his work with Whitey Morgan, Deadstring Brothers, and South Normal), along with Ben Vermeylen (Whitey Morgan, South Normal), and Jonah Brockman (Van Go Go), add layers of Americana, Alternative, and Rock to the mix. This collaboration elevates Beef beyond a standard Folk record, introducing elements that expand its sonic palette and depth.
Beef holds a special significance for Mackinder, as it is dedicated to his daughter, born in July. The album’s title comes from a humorous and endearing anecdote—Mackinder’s partner, a vegetarian, craved meat throughout her pregnancy, leading to their unborn daughter being affectionately nicknamed “Beef.” Mackinder wanted to release this album before his daughter’s birth, creating a musical snapshot of who he was B.B., “Before Beef.” This personal connection infuses the album with even more emotional weight, as it stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in Mackinder’s life.
The album’s sound and feel evoke the essence of classic artists like Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, The Replacements, and, as with all of Mackinder’s work, The Beatles. These influences are woven throughout the album, creating a tapestry of sounds that are both nostalgic and fresh.
Looking ahead, Mackinder has already booked a two-week tour in Spain for Spring 2025, with more European and U.S. dates on the horizon. As Beef makes its way into the world, it is sure to resonate with listeners who appreciate honest, storytelling-driven music that captures the essence of life’s journey.
